Luxembourg Foreign Minister accused Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of massive violations of the fundamental values of the EU. "Whoever builds, as Hungary does, fences against war refugees or who violates the freedom of the press and the independence of the judiciary, should be excluded temporarily or forever if necessary from the EU," Asselborn told the newspaper Die Welt. This is the only way to preserve the cohesion of the European community.

Jean Asselborn called for an amendment of the EU Treaty, to make such exclusion easier in the future. "It would be helpful if the rules could be changed so that the suspension of membership of an EU country in the future no longer requires unanimity," he said. Previously to Hungary also Austria had already been threatened with legal action because of its refugee policy.
Asselborn was particularly critical of serious misconduct in the refugee policy. "The fence which the Hungarians built to deter refugees is getting longer and higher. Hungary is not far away from giving the order to shoot refugees." Orbán announced the establishment of a second fence to secure the border with Serbia in late August.
On Friday meeting, the Heads of State and Government of the EU meet in the Slovak capital of Bratislava. They want to discuss how the Union should look like in the future when the UK has completed the planned Brexit.
