Who is to blame for the German election result?

Commissioner for East Germany : Merkel has brought neo-Nazis into the parliaments

After the AfD election results, the Commissioner for East Germany, Iris Gleicke is defends East Germans and harshly criticises the Chancellor. She had ultimately contributed to the fact that now neo-Nazis would be sitting in the parliaments.

Steimeier, Gierke and Merkel

After the strong election result for the AfD in the eastern states, the Commissioner for East Germany of the Federal Government, Iris Gleicke (SPD), defended East Germans. She finds it "terrible", how many had voted for the AfD also in her South Thuringian homeland, Glecke told the "Berliner Zeitung" on Tuesday. At the same time, however, she referred to the AfD's succession in the West.

All those who are now raising raising a hue and cry because of the AfD successes in the East, must be reminded that the AfD had even 15 percent in the federal state election in Baden-Württemberg last year, " said Gleicke. With regard to Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), she added, " What is definitely not now needed in Germany is a policy of doing nothing and being lulled according to the Bavarian pattern". In the end, this would lead the neo-Nazis into the parliaments and turn democracy upside down".

Saxony's Minister-President Tillich: "Something has built up here"

The AfD had become the third strongest force in the new Bundestag on Sunday with 12.6 percent. It received particularly many votes in East Germany - in Saxony, it came in front of the CDU with 27 percent of the votes. In some communities almost every second voter voted for the AfD.

Saxony's Prime Minister, Stanislaw Tillich (CDU), acknowledged omissions in the context of the losses for the CDU at the federal level and in Saxony as well as the election success of the AfD omissions. Possibly in Saxony, the topics were not discussed which in the past were discussed with whom it had been promised and this caused concern, Tillich told the Sächsischen Zeitung

Despite the economically good situation, the people seem to have something else to deal with. This is not just the question of refugees or schools. "That means something has been built up here, which we thought had been solved long ago," Tillich added.

Tillich acknowledges errors and announces a reorientation

As Chairman of the CDU, he is, of course, also responsible for this result. At the same time Tillich said that there was a clearly recognizable "liberal-conservative majority" in Saxony. This must be brought back into the focus again. Because here the Saxon CDU had lost many voters who had sought the way out in the AfD.

Tillich announced a reorientation of his own policy. In the country, where the AfD usually obtained more votes than in the big cities, a stronger commitment to medical care was needed. Internal security is also an urgent problem.

According to Tillich, the AfD reached its highest figures in the electoral areas along the Saxon borders to Poland and the Czech Republic. "These security questions were always latent, we may not have taken this seriously enough," said Tillich.
